Last Lecture
Rebecca Alpert an Associate professor of religion and women studies and Corinne Hewitt a sculptor and theatrical artist both spoke about relating to people and empathy. Rebecca talked about how we learn from our teacher/ professor as the professors learn from the students. she also talked about empathy and what it means and how we can better ourselves from it. She said that in her class she stretches out peoples comfort zones and making people think about putting themselves in other peoples shoes. I thought that her lecture was interesting and made sense and if she was still teaching a religion and women studies type class I would take it. But I found her talk to be better than the artist. Corinne Hewitt started with plumbing work before coming an artist and he found empathy through plumbing. He showed us a photo of a bathroom that he renovated and when he took down the dry wall and the tiles found empathy in the foundation and structure of the home. He made a video showing how he put a wall together and he leaves pieces of himself and of things in the walls so that if something leaks or breaks people will find it. I thought his stuff was okay but I at least thought it would be interesting and maybe a better speaker since I didn't really understand what his point was.

4/20 lecture
Philip Glan spoke he is from the painting, drawing and sculpture department. He talked about making art and studio and artists practice. He talked about the Bauhaus and how there they applied their skills to life. he also talked about how at the Bauhaus they have a an community and are able to collaborate projects with one another. In a way tyler is similar to the art community that people have at the Bauhaus. also there was this chart that showed all these different areas of art leading to this one area. It was like having each department feeding into this one big art school basically. (its hard to explain without the diagram from the lecture). Then Jess a sculptor and an adjunct professor talked about working beyond her practices. She is also about how she can help people and others and how her work goes along with that and how it goes from the outside to the inside. For exmaple she had this one piece that was at the old Tyler campus and it was a megaphone that was placed on the right where the stone wall was at the old campus where people could talk into it and you be able to hear the voice being at the campus on the inside. another piece that she did was making a bulletin board stand the same as what is outside near the library but inside Tyler and it had a micorphone at the top of it facing the entrance way to tyler so if you were to stand near the bulletin board you could hear people talking coming in and out of the building since there were speackers attached to this piece. I though that her pieces were very interesting since it had somewhat of a point to them and since the Tyler building was new when she made the one piece it was a funny way of going about things.

lecture 4/13
This lecture Mark Shetabi spoke briefly about painting before the other group of artists came in. Mark talked about what people have used in the past as paint and what it was made of and where it all started. he also talked about how there is no progress in painting and that you have to go backwards to move forwards sometimes. The next group of artists were a sculpture major, performance piece. i thought it was very interesting but at the same time i wished they would have talked about it too. this piece was interesting because they used found objects to create a beat and go with this weird music they had that was called submarine. first it was just this guy using a bow and something else (but I'm not sure what it was) to create this one noise then a guy wearing a Gorton like fisherman's outfit with boots and came in with chains and a crash cymbal with a lantern attached. then they both kept a beat with the chains and the cymbal.

4/6 lecture
This lectures speakers were a married couple Wanda Gibbins and Wes Shurman. Wanda works at a small museum called the Stickley Museum in NJ where she is a docent and works with children and activities for them. Wes Shurman is a painter but originally majored in Bio Chem before making his first painting. He said that he makes paintings about paintings. He works very abstractly too. He has had about 20 or more shows so far of his paintings. His paintings have been showed all over. Wanda also has a mission to follow at the Stickley musuem and tries to explain and prove that mission to other people whether they have gone to that museum many times or is new to the museum. They both talked about romance with and through their work. They both have different views and thoughts about how romance is expressed through their jobs since Wanda isn't an artist like her husband but yet at the same time she works at a museum helping others with knowledge of art too.
